Royal Navy – HMS Vivid

Redvers Thomas Comley was born at Cirencester on 4 September 1900, the elder son of Thomas W and Elizabeth Comley who, at the time of the 1911 census, lived at No 1 Dynevor Place, Fairford. His father was a slater and plasterer. At the time of enlistment Redvers gave his occupation as a gardener.
Redvers Comley’s career in the Royal Navy lasted but nine days. He had enlisted on 4 October 1918 for five years service plus seven in the Reserve. He died on 13 October of pneumonia at the RN Hospital at Plymouth, age 18. HMS Vivid was the name of the ‘personnel department’ of the RN.
His grave is marked by a private memorial — a stone cross, inside Fairford (St Mary) Churchyard.
