Perry: Driver Sidney Alfred (121068)

127th Battery, Royal Field Artillery

Sidney Alfred Perry was born on 6 June 1895 to Sidney Owen Perry (1870-1912), a parcel agent and his wife Eva Annie (née Smith) (1871-1905). According to the 1911 Census the couple had six children, one of whom had died.

In 1911 Sidney was living with his father at 85 St Catherine Street, in the Kingsholm district of Gloucester. It is unclear from the census return as to his employment.

Unfortunately, little, if any, information has survived regarding Sidney’s Army service. The CWGC register records that he served with 127 Battery, Royal Field Artillery, a unit which saw action on the Western Front throughout the war. It is not known when he joined the Army but a recently available Pension Record Card notes that he was discharged on 14 July 1919. The cause of discharge was the presence of pulmonary tuberculosis, which was attributable to his military service and he was therefore granted a 60% disability pension. The card also notes that he was unmarried.

According to a death notice placed in a local newspaper he died, on 18 June 1921, age 26, in the Royal Infirmary at Gloucester. It is highly probable that his death was the result of his tuberculosis.

He was buried in Gloucester Old Cemetery, where a standard CWGC headstone marks his grave.
