Thomas: Serjeant George Henry (10777)

3rd Battalion, Welsh Regiment

George Henry Thomas was born at Newtown, Steam Mills in late 1890, the son of Joseph Henry and Emma Jane Thomas. Joseph Henry Thomas was a tinplate worker, later a coal miner.

In 1901 the family were living on Ruardean Hill. By 1911 George Henry Thomas had moved to South Wales, where he was working as a grocer’s assistant and lodging in Treorchy with the Vater family.

It is not known when George enlisted in the Welsh Regiment but he landed in France with the 1st Battalion on 18 January 1915. He was then a Lance Corporal.

On 8 October 1917 he married Eva Lily Cole at Tglwysilan, Glamorgan. She remarried in 1927 to a William Griffiths.

Serjeant George Henry Thomas died on 3 November 1918, aged 27 years, at Connaught Hospital, Farnborough, Hampshire. According to a recently released Pension Record Card he died from influenza.

George is buried in Drybrook (Holy Trinity) Churchyard and his grave is enclosed by a private stone inscribed kerb.
