Warren: Private Alfred James (4486)

1/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment

Alfred James Warren was born on 7 August 1892 in Westbury-on-Severn and was the son of Sidney William Warren (1862-1900), a farm labourer, and Susannah (formerly Hayward, later Castledine) (1866-1945).

Prior to joining the Army he worked as a groom.

Alfred enlisted in mid-1915 and had served in France with ‘B’ Company, 1/5th Glosters for about two months when about 13 April 1916, he received a severe spinal wound from hostile shellfire whilst the battalion was in trenches at Hebuterne.

He was admitted to No 2 General Hospital at Le Havre on 17 April and on 20 April was transferred on to the Hospital Ship St Patrick to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Southampton where he died on 28 April 1916, aged 23 years.

At time of writing the CWGC Register and headstone show year of death to be 1918.

His remains were returned to Westbury-on-Severn for interment in St Peter and St Paul Churchyard which took place on 2 May.
