Maurice Alfred Wintle, otherwise Alfred Maurice, Wintle was born in Westbury-on-Severn in 1884 and was the son of Alfred James Wintle (1850-1897), one time farm bailiff, and Charlotte Ann (formerly Harvey) (1855-1926) of Heald Cottage, Rodley, near Westbury-on-Severn. Before joining the Army Alfred was a mason’s labourer.
Alfred was at the Royal Engineers Mounted Training Depot at Aldershot when, very soon after enlisting, he contracted pneumonia and was admitted to Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot where he died on 5 March 1915, aged 31 years.
His service was so short that it did not qualify for payment of the war gratuity.
Driver Maurice Alfred Wintle’s remains were returned to Westbury-on-Severn for interment in the churchyard of St Peter & St Paul, which took place on 10 March 1915.
His grave is marked by a standard CWGC headstone and he is commemorated on the Roll of Honour inside St Peter & St Paul Church.
