3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment

Albert Thomas Noah Carter was born in Gloucester in 1888. He was the son of Sidney and Agnes Carter, his father being a police sergeant. He had a sister, born about 1892. According to the Census taken in 1901, the family lived at Old Sodbury, near Chipping Sodbury.
The Gloucestershire Journal of 4 May 1918 carried a death notice and the 11 May edition a report of the funeral. These stated his address to be 54 Widden Street, Gloucester.
He enlisted at Worcester and died of wounds received in the France in Edmonton Military Hospital, Middlesex on 1 May 1918, aged 30.
There is a Medal Index Roll entry for him but this gives details of number, rank, name and the fact that prior to serving with the 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment he was with the 10th. No other records relating to his service appear to have survived. The above newspaper report stated that he had been in the Army for three years and was previously employed by the Great Western Railway in Worcester.
He was unmarried but the report of his funeral lists a fiancée, a Miss E (Ettie?) Mann, as one of the mourners.
He is buried in a family plot, marked by a tall stone headstone, in Gloucester Old Cemetery.
