2nd Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment

Clifford Sidney Victor Creed was born at English Bicknor in 1894, son of Arthur Creed (1864-1956), a tinplate worker, and Charlotte [Lottie] Elizabeth (née Bevan) (1867-1957). At the time of the 1911 census the couple had ten children (all boys, except one), all surviving.
Clifford Sidney Victor Creed’s occupation before joining the Army is unknown and he is shown as ‘at home’ on the 1911 census: several of his elder brothers were tinplate workers. The family were then living at Moorwood Coppice, Lydbrook.
He married, in 1916, Lilian May Hale (1897-1982). There was one daughter of the marriage and the family lived at Forge Hill, Lydbrook.
The Military Hospital, Catterick’s admissions records show that Private Victor Creed had completed one year and nine months service, including 13 months with a field force. This would indicate enlistment, probably conscription, in June/July 1916. His overseas service was with 2nd Battalion in Salonika. He was admitted on 20 March 1919 suffering from malaria and black water fever.
Clifford Sidney Victor Creed died at 1.45pm on 24 April 1919 at the Military Hospital, Catterick, Yorkshire, aged 24 years. His remains were returned to his home for burial at Lydbrook (Holy Jesus) Churchyard, where standard CWGC headstone marks his grave.
