2nd Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry

Daniel William Davies was born at Bedwellty, Tredegar, Monmouthshire on 21 October 1894 and he was the son of Hannah Davies. Hannah was a widow at the time of the 1901 census and was living at Hillesland, Coleford, Gloucestershire.
Having been a collier, he enlisted at Bristol into the Royal Marines on 17 May 1915, on a short service engagement. He was eventually posted to 2nd Battalion Royal Marine Light Infantry, Plymouth Division. On 5 October 1915 he went with a draft to join the Middle East Expeditionary Force, fighting in Gallipoli. He was with them for the period 22 to 28 October 1915, when he sustained an injury to his upper leg area and on 3 January 1916 he was repatriated to the UK suffering from paratyphoid.
He died at 12.10pm on 3 February 1916 in the RN Hospital at Haslar with death as a result of typhoid fever and broncho-pneumonia, age 22.
He left a wife, Lily May Davies, who lived at Yew Tree Cottage, Hillesland, Near Coleford, Gloucestershire and who later lived at Symonds Yat, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire and later on at Mordifoed, Hereford.
His grave in the churchyard at English Bicknor is marked by a CWGC headstone.
