George: Private William Thompson (187805)

Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)

William Thompson George died on 18 October 1918 aged 25 years from of complications following an operation to remove a brain abscess at a military hospital at Rugeley Camp, Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.

He was the husband of Maud C George of Haughwood Gate, Woolhope, Fownhope, Herefordshire (they married in the Bristol District in 1918) and the son of the late James George (died 1901) and Mrs Sarah Anne Russell (formerly George) of Belle Vue Road, Cinderford.

He had been in the Army for six months in a Machine Gun Corps Training Battalion and although he attested for the Army on 9 December 1915 , he had not been called up for service until April 1918 due to his occupation of collier.

William’s grave is marked by a CWGC headstone in Holy Trinity, Drybrook Churchyard which is also known as ‘Forest Church’.
