Jones: Private Second Class Alfred George (126082)

Royal Air Force

Alfred George Jones was born in the second quarter of 1882 at Gloucester to George and Ann Jones. His occupation was bricklayers labourer, prior to his service career. By the start of the Great War his father had died and his mother lived at 40 Chequers Lane, Coney Hill Road, Gloucester.

At the time of the 1911 Census Alfred was living at 1 Sandylands, Highfield Road, Gloucester, the home of his married sister.

According to his Royal Air Force (RAF) record in the National Archives (AIR 79/1130/126082) he enlisted for service on 21 August 1915 but it is not known in which unit he served. He joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) on 23 December 1917 as a Third Class Air Mechanic. The incorporation of the RFC into the RAF on 1 April 1918 coincided with a promotion to Second Class Air Mechanic.

On 20 February 1919 a medical board declared Alfred Jones as category B2 and on 23 February 1919 he was transferred to the RAF Reserve, whilst serving at Edinburgh. He died, presumably of illness attributable to war service, on 25 February 1920 at Gloucester, age 37, and was buried in the Great War plot at Gloucester Old Cemetery, where a standard CWGC headstone marks his grave. It is believed that he was unmarried.
