9th Company, Royal Army Medical Corps

William Sidney Henry Jones was born in Lydbrook in 1873, son of William Jones (1848-1903) landlord of The Prince of Wales Inn, Upper Lydbrook and Sarah Ann (née Smith) (1845-1907).
He was employed in the running of The Prince of Wales Inn and when his father died his mother became the licensee and he ran the establishment as his mother was blind. On her death he became the licensee and continued the business into the period of the Great War.
He married in about 1898 to one Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ellen whose maiden name is unknown. According to the 1911 Census she was American born. There were no children of the marriage but they adopted a daughter.
After leaving The Prince of Wales Inn, in about 1916/17, the family lived at Carters Piece, near Coleford.
No record of his service survives but he joined the Army, probably conscripted, late in the war as he is listed as a civilian in the 1918 Gloucestershire Electoral Roll.
Private William Sidney Henry Jones died from hypostatic pneumonia at Park Hall Camp, Oswestry
on 2 July 1919, aged 46 years. His remains were returned to for burial in Lydbrook (Holy Jesus) Churchyard and a standard CWGC headstone marks his grave.
