Moulton: Private Lionel Edwin (54294)

3/6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment

Lionel Edwin Moulton was born at St Briavels, Gloucestershire in 1886, son of Henry Moulton (1847-1936), a gardener, and Jane (formerly Scott) (1843-1927).

Lionel married, at St Briavels on 3 July 1912, Harriett Smith (1885-1968). He was then a gardener but was later a roadman and general labourer. There were two daughters of the marriage, born in November 1913 and August 1915.

3/6th Battalion was a Reserve Territorial Force unit and saw no overseas service. According to British Regiments 1914-1918, author Brigadier E A James, this battalion was formed in 1915 and was based variously at Weston-super-Mare, Lugershall, Cheltenham, Catterick, Horton, Northumberland and Seaton Delaval, as Tyne Garrison.

Private Lionel Edwin Moulton died from influenza, pneumonia and heart failure (contracted on active service) in hospital in Bristol on 30 October 1918, aged 32 years. His remains were returned to his home and interred in St Briavels (St Mary) Churchyard on 6 November 1918, where a standard CWGC headstone now marks his grave.

His widow remarried in 1922.
