1st Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry

Gilbert Nathaniel Rose was born in Gloucester on 3 December 1897.
At time of the 1901 Census he was one of six children born to Henry and Matilda Rose. His headstone indicates that another sibling died in 1912, aged six and would therefore not have appeared in the 1901 Census.
It would appear that Gilbert first enlisted in the Army at Gloucester on 5 December 1915, when aged 18.
He gave his occupation as an electrician and his address was 50 Vauxhall Road, Gloucester.
Details of his Army service have not yet been found.
He transferred from the Army to the Royal Marines on 24 November 1917, as a Private. After training he joined the 1st Reserve Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry (RMLI) on 11 January 1918 and transferred to the 1st Battalion RMLI on 9 April 1918 and went to join the battalion in France.
On 1 August 1918 he was invalided back to the UK, suffering from wounds, from which he died in Reading Hospital on 2 October 1918, age 20.
His father died on 16 November 1921, age 57.
Gilbert’s file in the National Archives is ADM 159/207.
