Stott: Second Lieutenant Philip Nicholson

2/10th Battalion, Manchester Regiment

Philip Nicholson Stott was born on 4 May 1896 at Oldham, Lancashire and educated at Mossall School, Nyon, Switzerland. He served for three and a quarter years as a Private in the Officers Training Corps, until December 1913. He was the son of Philip Sydney and Hannah Nicholson Stot of Stanton Court, Broadway, Worcestershire.

His Medal Index Card does not indicate any service abroad. His National Archives File (WO374/65090) contains little information.

Philip died on 21 March 1915 at Moss Lane, Southport, Lancashire from influenza and pneumonia, age 19. The Manchester Evening News of 22 March 1915 reported that this was whilst his battalion was billeted in the town. His father was the Administrator of his estate, describing his profession as ‘Gentleman’: he later became a Baronet. His parents erected a private headstone over his grave at Stanton (Staunton) St. Michael Churchyard.

The Gloucester Journal of 21 April 1917 reported that a faculty had been granted for an oak screen to be erected in the chancel of Stanton Church, in memory of Philip Nicholson Scott.
