Devonshire Regiment

William John Tudor was born in the third quarter of 1880 in the Chepstow Registration District, he would therefore have been aged 37 years when he died.
He was the son of William Tudor (1840-1913), a carpenter and beer house keeper, of The Carpenters Arms, Woolaston, and Ellen (formerly Jones) (1847-1901).
William John Tudor also followed the trade of carpenter before joining the Army.
William has no surviving Service Records other than the details in his entry in the burial register of Woolaston (St Andrew) Church. He served first as Private 29463 in the Devonshire Regiment before being transferred as 135499 to the Labour Corps.
His service was all ‘Home Service’. He died at home, of meningitis, on 11 May 1918 with his age given as 36 years. He was survived by two sisters. Private William John Tudor was buried in Woolaston (St Andrew) churchyard and his grave is marked by a standard CWGC headstone.
