Royal Navy – HMS Vivid

Ernest Grantley Gasser was born on 13 June 1889 at Sharpness, Gloucestershire. He was one of four sons and two daughters born to Thomas and Jane Gasser of Lock View, Sharpness Docks. His father was a butcher and grocer, who died in May 1909.
Ernest enlisted on 3 April 1917 for the duration of hostilities, giving his occupation as a butcher.
At the time of his death he was posted to HMS Vivid. This was a Shore Establishment at Devonport, which acted as a ‘personnel department’ and between 1912 and 1920 was located on the former HMS Cuckoo, an Ant Class Iron Screw Gunboat.
Ernest is buried in Berkeley Cemetery and he is remembered in St Mary the Virgin Church, Berkeley on the Roll of Honour
