Royal Garrison Artillery (No 3 Depot)

Sidney Kear was the son of Mrs Ruth Jenkins of Brockhollands, near Whitecroft, Lydney. His first name in his birth registration in 1894 was rendered as Sydney.
Sidney attested for the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) at Lydney on 11 December 1915, giving his occupation as collier. He was placed on the Army Reserve on 12 December, and eventually mobilized on 16 April 1918 and posted, as a Driver, to No 3 Depot, RGA.
On 26 April 1918, aged 23 years, he took his own life by hanging himself at the Citadel, Plymouth.
Sidney Kear’s remains were returned for burial in Bream (St James) Churchyard on 30 April 1918. His grave is unmarked but a CWGC special memorial has been erected in the churchyard to acknowledge his service in the Great War and his burial there.
