Townley: Private Frederick (59560)

5th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Frederick Townley was born late in 1900, the son of James Arthur and Kate Elizabeth Townley.

The 1911 Census states that the family, which included five children, were living at 18 Bennington Street in Cheltenham. At the time of submitting details for the CWGC Register, James and Kate Townley had emigrated to 2364 Bordeaux Street, Montreal, Canada.

Frederick spent barely a month in the Army. After enlisting in the 5th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment at Gloucester in September 1918, he died of pneumonia in the 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 17 October 1918, aged 18.

Private Frederick Townley was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery, where a CWGC headstone marks his grave. He is commemorated on the Cheltenham Borough War Memorial.
