Royal Garrison Artillery

Bernard Hunt was born in Lydbrook in 1883, son of Robert William Hunt (1856-1929), a labourer, and Catherine Ellen (née Banfield) (1855-1923) of The Incline, Lower Lydbrook. He was one of seven children.
He attested as a Gunner for service in the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA), at Lydney, on 2 September 1907 giving his occupation as general labourer. The service number 1403318 is a later seven figure number and 27128 is also associated with Gunner Bernard Hunt. In 1911 he was serving with 102nd Company RGA at Valetta in Malta.
Barnard’s service in the Great War is unknown, he did not, apparently, serve in a theatre of war overseas, as he was only entitled to the British War Medal.
Ex Staff Sergeant Hunt died at home, of pulmonary tuberculosis, on 20 April 1921 aged 38 years. He was buried at Lydbrook (Holy Jesus) Churchyard; a standard CWGC headstone marks his grave.
